Syracuse Storm Football!

Haden played football this year for the first time. He's been begging me for the past 2 years to let him play and because of the cost, and the time commitment, it hasn't been do-able until this year. He was in the Pee Wee League for Syracuse City. His "official" position was offensive guard, but he did so awesome at that, the coach ended up using him a lot on defense also. Now, most of you know that I come from a baseball family, so of course, I have always wanted my boys to not only play baseball, but be totally awesome at baseball. Haden has played baseball since he was 5 and has always been pretty good. But, he has never really LOVED it. Well, he LOVES football. I have seen the biggest boost in his self confidence since he started playing. I am so proud of him for his dedication to practicing EVERY NIGHT, even when he was tired, sick, or just plain didn't want to. He stuck with it and it paid off. I feel really bad that I haven't let him play until now, but I am so amazed at how good he is with this being his first year. I am now, officially, a "Football Mom"! And I LOVE it!!! Good Job Haden...Can't wait til next season! Love you!

Gotta love having his name on his jersey
Our first game...Haden was so picky about his shirt being tucked in
Coach Ervin making an adjustment to his pads
This time he was on the kick-off team
A couple of moms always had signs made for the team to run through when they came back from their half-time pep talk
Getting excited and running through the signs
This pic was taken at their last game against Roy. Syracuse played so awesome and won 40-0!!!

Buffalo Point Fundraiser

SO...BOTH of my boys are selling Happenings Books. In my opinion, they are the worst fundraiser ever, but nevertheless, that's what their school chose this year. I'm just wondering if any of my blogging buddies would like to purchase one or if you know of anyone who would??? They are $20, and they actually do have some really good deals in them (that is if you remember to have the book with you when you need the coupon!) Let me know if any of you are interested. My email is bfurse@qwest.net Thanks!

Rough Housin'

My boys LOVE to rough house, andthey especially love it when they can get Cody to join in!Usually they get yelled at for doing it in the house, but this time everyone joined in, including Maycie!

I LOVE this pic...everyone playing and laughing together!
ALL my boys, tangled up!

Getting Gage...Or rather BITING Gage!

Poor Haden! (he's on the bottom!)

You can't see Maycie's face in this pic, but she is SCREAMING at Cody and the boys. Right after this, she took off, almost running and joined in on the tackle.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY GAGE!

Gage is 8 years old today! Wow! Where does the time go??? 8 is such an important birthday...he'll be getting baptized in the next couple months. I can't believe he's already old enough for such a huge step in his life.
His birthday celebrating lasted a couple days. On Friday after school, he had a "friend" birthday party at our house. Then last night we had family over for cake and ice cream. I took the day off work today and went to the school to surprise him with McDonalds for lunch. That normally wouldn't be a big deal, but they're still having sack lunches at school since the cafeteria still isn't done, so he was very happy to see me with Happy Meal in hand!
Gage is such a great kid and still my baby boy! Happy Birthday buddy!

Here's all the partiers do an art project. The theme was transformers, so I printed off a picture of Optimus Prime, mounted them on card stock and had them puff paint it. They turned out so cool! Here's how to do it:
4 Tbsp. salt
4 Tbsp. SELF RISING flour
water
food coloring
Mix the salt and flour with water until it becomes a thin paste. Divide into paper cups and add food coloring to each cup. Apply to picture using Q-tips. Microwave for 30 seconds and the paint will "PUFF" up. So fun!
Transformer Pinata time!

Gage's Party Friends!

SpiderMan Cake...We ended up with 2 different themes this year, Transformers and SpiderMan due to the fact that I couldn't find anywhere that had transformer cake kits in stock!

Sweet! Presents!

Make a wish ANNNDDDD....BLOW!

Invisible Mother

I'm having one of THOSE days...one of those days when I'm constantly yelling at my kids for every little thing. We had family over to celebrate Gage's birthday tonight and I wanted the house to be clean and in order. One of THOSE days when I feel like everything I've done the last 2 days (the cleaning, the laundry, the birthday party planning, birthday shopping, etc.) has totally gone unnoticed. Yep, one of THOSE days! So, I sat down to read my emails and here is one that my friend, Cami, sent me. She must've known exactly how I'm feeling today. But, now I feel better! I'm a mom, and this is what we do!

Invisible Mother.......
It all began to make sense, the blank stares, the lack of response, the way one of the kids will walk into the room while I'm on the phone and ask me a question.

Inside I'm thinking, 'Can't you see I'm on the phone?'
Obviously, not.
No one can see if I'm on the phone, or cooking, or sweeping the floor, or even standing on my head in the corner, because no one can see me at all.
I'm invisible. The invisible Mom. Some days I am only a pair of hands, nothing more: Can you fix this? Can you tie this? Can you open this?
Some days I'm not a pair of hands; I'm not even a human being. I'm a clock to ask, 'What time is it?' I'm a satellite guide to answer, 'What number is the Disney Channel?' I'm a car to order, 'Right around 5:30, please.'
I was certain that these were the hands that once held books and the eyes that studied history and the mind that graduated sum a cum laude - but now they had disappeared into the peanut butter, never to be seen again. She's going; she's going; she is gone!

One night, a group of us were having dinner, celebrating the return of a friend from England ..

Janice had just gotten back from a fabulous trip, and she was going on and on about the hotel she stayed in.
I was sitting there, looking around at the others all put together so well. It was hard not to compare and feel sorry for myself.
I was feeling pretty pathetic, when Janice turned to me with a beautifully wrapped package, and said, 'I brought you this.'
It was a book on the great cathedrals of Europe .
I wasn't exactly sure why she'd given it to me until I read her inscription:
'To Charlotte , with admiration for the greatness of what you are building when no one sees.'
In the days ahead I would read - no, devour - the book. And I would discover what would become for me, four life-changing truths, after which I could pattern my work:

No one can say who built the great cathedrals - we have no record of their names.

These builders gave their whole lives for a work they would never see finished.

They made great sacrifices and expected no credit.

The passion of their building was fueled by their faith that the eyes of God saw everything.

A legendary story in the book told of a rich man who came to visit the cathedral while it was being built, and he saw a workman carving a tiny bird on the inside of a beam. He was puzzled and asked the man, 'Why are you spending so much time carving that bird into a beam that will be covered by the roof? No one will ever see it.' And the workman replied, 'Because God sees.'

I closed the book, feeling the missing piece fall into place. It was almost as if I heard God whispering to me, 'I see you, Charlotte. I see the sacrifices you make every day, even when no one around you does. No act of kindness you've done, no sequin you've sewn on, no cupcake you've baked, is too small for me to notice and smile over. You are building a great cathedral, but you can't see right now what it will become.'
At times, my invisibility feels like an affliction. But it is not a disease that is erasing my life. It is the cure for the disease of my own self-centeredness. It is the antidote to my strong, stubborn pride.
I keep the right perspective when I see myself as a great builder. As one of the people who show up at a job that they will never see finished, to work on something that their name will never be on.
The writer of the book went so far as to say that no cathedrals could ever be built in our lifetime because there are so few people willing to sacrifice to that degree.
When I really think about it, I don't want my son to tell the friend he's bringing home from college for Thanksgiving, 'My Mom gets up at 4 in the morning and bakes homemade pies, and then she hand bastes a turkey for three hours and presses all the linens for the table.' That would mean I'd built a shrine or a monument to myself. I just want him to want to come home. And then, if there is anything more to say to his friend, to add, 'you're gonna love it there.'

As mothers, we are building great cathedrals. We cannot be seen if we're doing it right.

And one day, it is very possible that the world will marvel, not only at what we have built, but at the beauty that has been added to the world by the sacrifices of invisible women.

Hope this encourages you when the going gets tough as it sometimes does. We never know what our finished products will turn out to be because of our perseverance.

Recipe...Peach Cake! (A request from Jen)

This time of year is one of my most favorites! I love peaches and this is when they are in season and are the YUMMIEST! This is my most favorite peach recipe although I have yet to taste a "peach" recipe that I don't like! :)
Peach Cake:
1 1/2 C. Sugar
2 eggs
3/4 C. oil
1 1/3 C. peeled, mashed peaches (about 3 or 4 peaches) (I peel them and put them in my food processor to mash them)**
2 C. flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cinnamon
dash of salt
Pour batter into a greased 9x13 pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 min. Let cool. Top cake with fresh, peeled, sliced peaches and glaze (recipe follows).
Glaze:
1 C. sugar
2 tsp. flour
1/2 C. butter
2 egg yolks
2/3 C. evaporated milk
1 tsp. vanilla
chopped pecans (opt.)
Boil until thick, stirring constantly. Let cool, then pour over fresh peaches.

**Just an FYI...I always have to buy my peaches ( I don't know anyone who grows them), so to make it so I don't have to buy as many, I have used canned peaches IN the cake, but always use fresh ones on top.

Where were you that September day?

I'm copying my cousin Sherydon...I remember September 11, 2001 like it was yesterday. I was still married to Dan and living in our house in Layton. I got up and turned on the TV to find cartoons for Haden. He was mad because the only thing on was the news. I flipped through every channel only to find out they were all covering the same thing. I saw the 2nd tower fall and remember thinking, "Oh my gosh, all those people!" It's Jill's birthday and it was my turn to take cake in to work for her. Dan called to see if I was watching the news. I moved one of our tv's into the kitchen so I could watch while I baked Jill's peach cake. When I got to the clinic with the cake, the girls in my department were listening to the radios and had a little black and white TV they were watching trying to find out what was going on.
I just wanted to take a quick second and just say that I REMEMBER! My heart still goes out to all the families who lost loved ones that day. The radio said today that they figure over 10,000 kids lost a parent that day. It made me hug my kids a little tighter and a little longer this morning. Thanks so much to all the men and women who defend this country and our freedom. THANKYOU!

First Day of School! FINALLY!!

My boys finally started school today. Why the delay, you ask??? An unfinished school! They are going to Buffalo Point Elementary (Stupid name, I know), a brand new school closer to our house. After seeing the school at Back to school night last night, I'm not sure why they're even starting now. It gave me major anxiety! They have no cafeteria, which means SACK lunches in their classrooms, no library, the grass behind the school was just laid, so no playing on it for at least a week, there's tons of dirt in front of the school because the sprinkling system is still being put in, and well, basically it's total CHAOS! Now don't get me wrong, it's very state-of-the art and it will be so nice when it's done, but until then, they are in a huge mess! I am excited for them to be at a brand new school, though, with brand new everything! I didn't even have to buy any school supplies for either of them! I really am excited for them! It's going to be a great year! GO STAMPEDE!

What handsome boys!

Gage (and Maycie) in line at the 2nd grade door.

Gage in front of his locker. He feels so big!

Haden in class...I had to sneak this pic...he was giving me the "Ahhh, MOM!" about having his pic taken this morning. He's going to be a big junior high kid next year and probably won't even let me take him to school! I had to do what I could get away with!

I went to pick up Gage from his classroom after school and this is what I saw...I'm guessing it was a WAY long first day of school!

Haden just got off the bus...I know, I know...I'm a dork for taking this pic!

What I did last week...

Yay! My blog is finally letting me post pics again!
So, this is a little of what I did last week...Between Sunday and Wednesday, I canned 48 pints of salsa and made 10 loaves of zucchini bread. This may not be a big deal to some of you, but this was my first time canning by myself, so it made me very nervous. I grew up helping my mom can all the time, so I was pretty confident in my abilities, but still nervous nonetheless. On Sunday, Cody was home, so he helped me do our first batch of salsa. Keep in mind it was just a SINGLE batch. He helped me by cutting up all the peppers, and onions and running the food processor while I blanched and peeled tomatoes. Out of that batch, we got 14 pints of salsa. We were so proud of ourselves! We got the recipe from a guy Cody works with, and it is so YUMMY! Well, our tomatoes started coming on like wildfire, so I got this brilliant idea to do a DOUBLE batch of salsa by myself on Wednesday. I was thinking, "well, the first batch was a piece of cake, and it turned out perfect, so why not do a double batch and get rid of these tomatoes?" I am now questioning any brilliant ideas before speaking them, cuz it wasn't so brilliant! It was A LOT of work! We cut up all the peppers and onions the night before to make it a little easier, so all I had to do that day was blanche, peel, and blend tomatoes and put it all together in the pot and let it cook ALL DAY. It took me 3 hours to do 2 5-gallon buckets of tomatoes! In the end, that batch gave us 34 pints and it turned out way yummy also!
All the tomatoes blanched and ready to peel

Cooking salsa! Smells so good! This is my mom's pressure cooker! It's huge...

And full to the very top!

34 pints of salsa! (And yes, those are zucchinis in the background waiting for me to do something with them...I'm EXTREMELY burned out on zucchini)

Salsa & zucchini bread (well, some of it-the rest was either consumed by my family or given away).
WAY TO GO ME!!!!
